Does the Looking Glass need a computer to run?

At the moment, only the 16" and larger (27", 32", and 65") Light Field Displays require a computer to run. All other displays (Go, Portrait, HLD, musubi) do not require a computer to run. You can check if your computer is compatible with your Light Field Display here.

Looking Glass Go can run standalone without a computer in Standalone Mode.

You can also update the photos on your Looking Glass Go using the companion mobile app (available on iOS or Android. All other applications (like Liteforms, Looking Glass Studio, and development with any of our software plugins), you must use a companion PC or Mac (we recommend a dedicated GPU for Windows and Macbook M1-M3 to run dedicated software applications and plug-ins).

Looking Glass Portrait can run standalone without a computer but will be limited to displaying 3D content synced with your display. For creating, syncing and sharing content, use your Looking Glass Portrait with a companion PC or Mac (we recommend a dedicated GPU for Windows and Macbook M1-M3 to run dedicated software applications and plug-ins).

(Some demos & applications are limited to PC. For example, our interactive demos involving a Leap motion or keyboard controls only work with PC.)

Hololuminescent Displays can run standalone without a computer, as every HLD comes with a demo hologram media player (a customized Raspberry Pi 4) for demonstration and experimentation purposes. For long-term deployed installations or any installations that require cloud management of media, we recommend using a digital signage solution such as BrightSign or Scala. These solutions must support:

  • 1080p video output for the HLD 16"
  • 4K video output for the HLD 27" and HLD 86"

musubi can run standalone without a computer once your content has been ported to the display from our desktop software. It also has an USB-C rechargeable 2,000mAH battery, which enables wireless playback for up to 3 hours.
