Can I use Unity or Unreal Engine for real-time HLD content?
Yes. Unity and Unreal Engine can both be used to create real-time, interactive experiences for Hololuminescentâ„¢ Displays.
HLDs accept conventional 2D video output from a connected computer. This makes real-time HLD development similar to building for a portrait monitor, with the additional creative requirement of framing the subject inside the holographic alcove.
Basic workflow
- Build the interactive experience in Unity or Unreal Engine.
- Set the output for the HLD's portrait resolution and orientation.
- Frame important subjects inside the holographic volume.
- Connect the computer to a compatible HLD through HDMI, DisplayPort, or another supported video connection.
- Test the experience on the physical display and adjust framing, shadows, and camera placement as needed.
The 16-inch, 27-inch, and 86-inch HLDs can accept live video from an external computer. musubi cannot act as a live computer display and is not a target for real-time Unity or Unreal applications.
HLD versus Light Field Display rendering
The real-time performance limitations sometimes associated with Unreal Engine and Light Field Displays do not apply in the same way to HLDs.
Light Field Displays must render multiple views to create a light field. HLDs receive ordinary 2D video, so Unity and Unreal Engine can both be used for real-time HLD output.
