What are quilt and RGBD content for Light Field Displays?
Light Field Displays can show several types of holographic content. Two common formats are quilts and RGBD images or videos.
What is a quilt?
A quilt is a single image or video frame containing a grid of views of the same 3D scene. Each tile shows the scene from a slightly different viewpoint.
The Looking Glass display converts those views into a light field. As viewers move from side to side, they see different perspectives of the scene without wearing a headset.
Quilts are the primary content format produced by Looking Glass creator tools, including Unity, Unreal Engine, Blender, and supported web workflows.
What is RGBD?
RGBD combines:
- RGB: the color image or video
- D: a grayscale depth map describing how near or far each part of the image is
The color and depth information are placed together in a supported layout. Looking Glass Studio uses the depth map to create a holographic view from the source media.
RGBD can be useful when a creator already has color and depth information, or when depth has been generated with another application. Looking Glass creator plugins primarily produce quilts, so RGBD depth data usually comes from a separate tool or workflow.
How do I play these formats?
Looking Glass Studio can load supported quilt and RGBD images and videos and play them on a Light Field Display connected through Looking Glass Bridge.
